At the bottom of the wooden panel is Christ stepping from the tomb,

and on the left, possibly the last Abbess,

Elizabeth Ryprose who had the reredos painted

and who is holding the banner in latin, the Lord has risen from the tomb.

This silver icon was bequeathed to the Abbey by Aldyth Wellington on her death in 1996.

She worshiped here and served Romsey in many ways

including three years as Romsey's mayor.

The figures depicted are those of (from left to right)

St Basil the great, St John Chrysostom, and St Gregory.

An Epitaph vpon John St Barbe Esq: the sone of Henry St Barbe

Esq: and Grissell his wife the daughter of John Pynsent Esq.

He about the 42 yeare of his age & she the 22 yeare of her age

Leaving fower sonns Henry John Francis & Edward slept in the Lord

Earth’s rich in mines of pretious dust Whom nature wedlock grace did tie

And faithfull ones

Since in her bowels rest these just In one fast chain of vnity

Whose silent bones

Dead here do rest yet left not earth Because such righteous & theire seed

In fame & state

But brought fower sonns to perfect birth Shall flourish here and shall in deed

Tryumph o’re fate

An Anagram upon theire names JOHN   GRISSELL - SAINTE BARBE

BE IN SHARES IN BLEST GLORIE

John St Barbe & Grissell his wife were buried 2nd September 1658;

their Son John was created a Baronet 30th Dec 1663,

& died at Broadlands 7th Sept 1723
